Take it all off Thursday! - Nutrisystem Update

Friday, May 28, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

I know - I am a day late. My Nutrisystem update is usually posted on Thursdays. Actually our family motto has always been "A day late and a dollar short".

I am sharing some very good news from the wonderful people at Nutrisystem. I have made such a positive impressionable journey in my 12 weeks on the program, that Nutrisystem has generously asked me to extend for 12 more weeks. I am so grateful for the support towards my health goals. I had sad tears in my eyes when the plan was ending. Now I have tears of happy joy for continuing my journey.

This week was pretty much on my own. I have been waiting for my newest Nutrisystem food delivery. I did have a few meals left in my stash. I did not have enough for a full week so I tried my very best to have nutritious foods in place of Nutrisystem meals. I managed pretty well with lots of veggies, salads and fruits. Tuna and lots of cottage cheese were my friends this week. I am so glad my order has arrived just in the nick of time. Today begins the first day of my 13th week.

Because I was "off" my Nutrisystem so to speak this week, I was a little afraid of getting on the scale this morning. I know I tried my best this week with eating but I also know I could have done a lot better. Okay the scale says..... no difference than last week. I am holding at 16.5 pounds lost in the first 12 weeks. I am thrilled with not seeing a gain this week. I was not so sure that my attempt at non-Nutrisystem eating would have showed up as a gain. I am proud of myself. I did okay. I did not lose anything but I did keep it off. That makes me feel good to know I can maintain on my own. I am learning about better food choices which is something I never have been able to grasp before.

This week I will be concentrating on getting more activity. I want to really push myself for the next 12 weeks to get close the my ultimate weight loss goal. With the help of Nutrisystem I know I am eating better, and taking care of myself. After all, it is time to take control, for now and for life.

Consider Nutrisystem for your healthy weight loss journey. It is working for me. If you need support or have any questions, the staff at Nutrisystem will be glad to help you. I would be happy to answer any questions about my journey too. Feel free to leave me a comment and I will get back to you.

Many thanks to Nutrisystem for providing the program for my weight loss journey.

Disclosure: I received a gratis Nutrisystem program in exchange for my weekly reviews. No monetary compensation was offered or accepted for this post. The opinions above are my own. Others experience may vary.

Organic Bistro: Whole Life Meals - Review with Giveaway

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

Since the beginning of 2010. I have been actively pursuing better health. I am learning the importance of nutrition. I look for whole grain foods, enjoy more vegetables, and watch for healthy fats. Organic Bistro - Whole Life Meals fits all those good choices while tasting great.

Organic Bistro believes wellness is a journey, not a place. When we eat better, we feel better. Organic Bistro uses wholesome organic ingredients, fiber rich grains, and plenty of vegetables. Their meals are low-glycemic plus gluten-free. The science of nutrition is based on best food choices.

Organic Bistro uses:
Best Sources of Carbohydrates: vegetables, whole grains, fruits, beans, legumes/beans
Best Sources of heart-healthy Fats: fish, nuts, olive oil, plant oils
Best Sources of Protein: legumes/beans, fish, soyfoods and lean poultry, grass-fed beef

With all that goodness, how do the meals taste? Courtesy of Organic Bistro, I was able to sample a few of the meals. I visited my local health food market where I easily found the meals in the freezer section. My choices are Ginger Chicken, Wild Salmon, and Jamaican Shrimp Cake. Each one was delicious, with a lively blend of flavor. Starting with the Ginger Chicken with Green Tea Veggies & Almond Pilaf. Sounds great, tastes really good. The ginger chicken has a little kick to the sauce which I loved. It was not too spicy. The ginger flavor was very enjoyable. The veggies were sugar snap peas, another favorite of mine. The Almond Pilaf made this meal for me. I loved the addition of edamame in the pilaf. Good stuff! The Wild Salmon in a Rosemary Orange Glaze with Cranberry Pilaf & Broccoli. I did like the orange flavor sauce on the salmon but the rest of the meal seemed to need a little more seasoning. I wanted it to be more cranberry. Broccoli always need something for me. I guess I am not that fond of broccoli. My absolute favorite of the 3 meals I sampled was the Jamaican Shrimp Cake: Jerk Spiced Shrimp Cake with Red Pepper - Green Bean Salad with Mango-Black Bean Rice. The description alone made my mouth water. The flavor was incredible. The jerk seasoning made the shrimp cake so delicious. The mango black bean rice was very tropical and oh so tasty. The green bean salad balanced the spice of the dish very nicely. I would purchase this meal again!

Organic Bistro offers 8 varieties of meals. Try one of the recipes to accompany your Organic Bistro Meals. You can find Organic Bistro Meals at many health food markets. Use the store locator for a store nearest you. For more healthy organic meals - try Helen's Kitchen products. They have food choices of entrees, meat alternatives and burritos. KINeSYS Sunscreen - Review with Giveaway!

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

Ahhhh Sunny Southern California - wait it is almost June and we have not seen hardly any bright sunny days all spring. We are in the middle of the May Grays and then the June Gloom comes in from the marine layer. The sun may peek out in the mid afternoon when the layer burns off. When it does come out we need sunscreen. Our family is pretty much outdoors in the pool the entire summer. It is very important to be protected by a good sunscreen.

KINeSYS Performance Sunscreens are formulated for everyone in the family. Courtesy of KINeSYS, I was sent two formulations to sample in the Calirfornia sun. Wish we had sun lately. What I like about the spray sunscreens of KINeSYS is the scent. I find the scent very pleasing of the SPF30 Spray. It is light and tropical scented to me. I was correct in the tropical scent, the SPF30 spray sunscreen is light mango scented. The Kids Spray Sunscreen is unscented. What is more important about KINeSYS Sunscreen is what is NOT in it. KINeSYS is alcohol-free, oil-free and preservative-free. The usual skin irritants have been replaced with more sophisticated ingredients. KINeSYS products meet all the characteristics of a true performance sunscreen.

Using the KINeSYS spray is very easy to apply. The sunscreen is a microspray with a fine mist, which dries quickly, leaving no mess. The spray is water and sweat resistant. You can feel confident in the protection KINeSYS provides. The formula is antioxidant UVA/UVB protection and has been tested by dermatologists. Hypoallergenic / Non-comedogenic makes it skin friendly. I liked the feel of the spray on my skin. There is no greasy feeling at all. When you spray it on your skin, it goes on so light you do not feel a dampness. To apply properly, while spraying, sweep the bottle across the body part to distribute the spray evenly. Don't forget the ears and the neck! Each bottle size contains many applications of product. The 1oz bottle provides over 170 sprays and the 4oz bottle contains over 700 sprays. The microspray provides very good coverage so a little goes a long way. There are many formulations available for particular skin types. KINeSYS also offers Sun Care Kits containing a variety of products for the entire family or for the perfect sun protection needs.

You can purchase KINeSYS Performance Sunscreen directly online. They do accept Paypal and have a free shipping offer for orders over $45.00. For your summertime fun make sure you are protected from the sun with KINeSYS Sunscreens.

Random Recipes - See's Candies

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

I love See's Candies. They are a favorite here in California. My chocolate piece I will always choose first is the Scotchmallow®. See's caramel layered with a See's Honey Marshmallow then covered in dark chocolate. Mmmmm. So delicious.

Imagine my surprise when I spotted a recipe using the Scotchmallow®. From See's, they have made recipes using some of their best selling candies.

See's Scotchmallow® Rolls - are made with the candies and refrigerated cresent rolls. Honestly I would never have enough Scotchmallows left over to make these scrumptious looking rolls but the do look tasty.

For more decadent recipes browse the selection at See's. My mouth is watering looking at the fabulous photos.

I have decided I must stop at See's today.

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

My spring cleaning has turned into a work in progress which will take me long into the summer. I am finding so many areas of my home that need to be organized, cleaned and thoroughly tended to. I am starting with closets, cupboards, dressers and then I will tackle all the floors. Thank goodness for Target! Target has teamed up with Procter & Gamble to support St Judes. Your purchases will help St Jude's fight to find cures. In addition to the donation to St. Jude, P&G will provide St. Jude patients and their families with these same P&G products to use throughout their stay at Target House and other St. Jude residential facilities in Memphis.

Have you shopped at Target lately? My local Target just completed a remodel to include more fresh foods, while expanding the grocery section. I am finding a great new variety of foods. It is so convenient to be able to get foods and P&G cleaning supplies all in one stop. I like what is happening at Target. I seem to be visiting more these days. They have made it fun to shop again.

Take advantage of the limited edition "red' products from now through June 13th. The products are pretty cool in the red colors. Courtesy of Target and Procter & Gamble, I was sent the limited edition "Red" Swiffer Sweeper with samples of Tide and Bounce to clean my house. Gotta Love that Bounce Smell. I use my Red Swiffer Sweeper all the time. It is handy and so quick to use. Did you know that Tide has a Febreze formula? Febreze is my choice for air freshening, it smells so good. Make your purchase fast, the limited edition "red" Swiffer Sweeper was selling out fast when I was at Target.

It is a dessert made with prepared angel food cake cubes mixed with vanilla pudding and whipped topping, layered with three flavors of Lucky Leaf pie filling, Apple, Cherry and Blueberry. Scrumptious! It makes a nice large size dessert sure to please a party full. Let me tell you, it is so delicious. My family loved it! Each layer has the yummy fruitiness of the pie filling. The pudding mixed with the angel food cake makes it a moist treat in the layers of fruit. This recipe looks great too, especially if you create it in a large glass bowl. The layers are very patriotic!

101 Things I Learned in Culinary School - Book Giveaway

Friday, May 21, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

I find it fascinating to hear little tidbits of information from Chefs. I can imagine all the knowledge that passes in the kitchen among all the culinary classes. Louis Eguaras, a chef at the Le Cordon Bleu Program, is sharing his cooking insights in a lovely kitchen reference book 101 Things I Learned in Culinary School.

This handy book is a culinary insight to the basics of cooking, preparation and presentation of meals. As a home cook, having this knowledge makes me feel more like the inner chef I have always wanted to be. Chef Louis supplies the information in layman terms demonstrated with illustrations throughout the book. Simple points such as how to boil water to more complex ideas of the prime cuts of meat. I enjoyed learning tips from this gem of a book. 101 Things I Learned in Culinary School is a small compact size book that will easily fit in any kitchen for quick reference. The culinary tips are invaluable for any cook or chef.

Random Recipes - Star Wars Tribute: Yoda Soda

Thursday, May 20, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

May the force be with you! Star Wars is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Not to give away my age or anything but I was a teen when it came out. I spent many hours in the movies watching it over and over again. For my random recipe today I found a Star Wars recipe for Yoda Soda.

Yoda Soda
3 limes
3 tablespoons sugar, or more to taste
1 cup sparkling water
1 scoop lime sherbet

1. Cut one lime in half. Squeeze the juice of each half into a measuring cup. Repeat with the remaining limes until you have 1/4 cup lime juice.
2. Put the lime juice and 3 tablespoons sugar in a small pitcher. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add the sparkling water and stir until mixed. Taste and add more sugar if desired.
3. Place a scoop of lime sherbet in a tall glass. Pour in the lime water. Serve immediately. Makes 1 serving.

For those also curious about the National food day, Today is National Quiche Lorraine Day!

Enjoy your day!

Tatutina: Hand Painted Recipe Box - Giveaway

Thursday, May 20, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

One can never have too many recipes or too many recipe boxes for that matter. I have quite the collection of family recipes and recipe clippings I have gathered over the years. I like fun recipe boxes too. I have a few antique metal recipe boxes and a favorite one I keep all my good recipes in. A recipe box should be a fun happy place filled with good stuff. The recipe boxes at Tatutina are bright colorful boxes of fun.

I love all the bold colors and patterns on all the items from Tatutina. Here you will find "Hand painted gifts for a happy lifestyle". My goodness the selection is amazing. Bookends, Kid's Stools, Wooden Letters, Keepsake Boxes and my favorite the adorable Recipe Boxes. Each item is handpainted to bring out the character of the design. The original recipe box features a black background with cute food graphics of hamburgers, chicken and pizza. There are six different designs of recipe boxes to choose from. Courtesy of Tatutina I was graciously sent the Coffee Cup Recipe Box. I love coffee too so this choice is perfect for my kitchen. I adore the bright red color with the pink accents. The pink polka dot coffee mug painted on top is darling. It also has a bright orange coffee mug on the front. The box is a generous size to hold 4x6 index cards. Just glancing at this too cute for words recipe box makes me happy to know all the good recipes I have inside.

Tatutina is a small mother-daughter business. Their mission is to create unique, happy and fun products, inspired by family, homes and art. You can order directly online. With so many happy things to choose from finding a little Tatutina sunshine for your home is easy.

Random Recipes - Disneyland's New Orleans Square Fritters

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

Have you had the scrumptious fritters found in New Orleans Square of Disneyland? Those yummy big balls of egg batter fried then coated with sugar served warm. Pair it with a tasty hot chocolate and it is a sweet tooth pleaser!

I found this recipe a few years back posted in our local newspaper.

Disneyland's New Orleans Square Fritters (Choux Fritters)
1/4 pound butter
1 cup boiling water
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 and 3/4 ounces sifted flour
4 eggs
vegetable oil for deep frying

Have you ever participated in the pay it forward chain events at a drive thru, or a coffee shop? I have! Where one person starts a chain of kindness by paying for an extra something for the next person behind them. When that person comes, they are graciously paying for the next person and so on. It was a lot of fun and I was going to by my coffee anyway. It all starts with an act of kindness.

Boom Boom Cards makes it easy to share intentional acts of kindness. Change the world in four easy steps!

A little history of Boom Boom Cards:
Boom Boom! Cards are an intentional act of kindness kit where all you have to do is be kind, track it on line. If you have ever thought, “Gee, I sure would like to help change the world” this kit is for you!Started by a group of people with an idea. In 2006 co-founders Helene and Mary came up with the idea create call to action cards that could be tracked on the internet. After a few years of trial and planning, Boom Boom cards went live in December 2008 and official launch to the public in February 2009.

Each Boom Boom Card Kit comes with 26 cards. The deck is registered on the Boom Boom website and each card "played" can them be entered by logging the tracking code to the site. So what are the cards like? I was sent two editions of the Boom Boom Cards to check out the idea. The Original edition and the Teen Edition. There is one more edition to choose from ,the Everyday Boom Booms. Let's take a look at a few of the individual cards to see the concept. Original deck card #1 Buy a Stranger a cup of Coffee. How simple is that! Step one, when someone gives you a Boom Boom card, register the card at boomboomcards.com. 2. Do the act of kindness on the flip side. 3. Go back to the website and tell your story. 4. Pass the card along to anyone. You can follow your card in the website map. It is pretty interesting to see where it winds up. Here is another card idea - Card #11 Write a knock knock or silly joke on a sticky note and put it on a co-workers desk, as a bookmark in a book, or on someones door etc. Spread a little laughter. One more card #23 The next time you tip someone, be overly generous, It'll make their day. You get the idea. With 26 cards to work with, you can start a Boom Boom Revolution. The teen cards are specifically targeted for school activities, home chores and friend and family situations. Teens will love them. It is kind of fun to anonymously hand out the cards. I registered my deck so I can track the cards that are logged in. I am anxiously awaiting the first card to be entered.

Boom Boom Gives back too.  BBR is a 4th Sector Corporation, For Profit For Good. Boom Boom! Cards are made from 30-100% post consumer recyclable materials. Love Bottle: The Reusable Glass Water Bottle - Review

Monday, May 17, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

In my family we have been going more everyday to reusable products. Less throw away items and we recycle as much as possible. One of our biggest changes was with bottled water. We stopped our expensive water delivery service and opted to purchase our own water cooler and we get the bottles filled at a convenient water store. It saves us money and we are not buying the small individual bottles any longer. We use refillable water containers to take with us.

Here is one of the most unique containers I have seen. Introducing the Love Bottle. This is an all glass bottle! Glass is reusable and the Love Bottle can be filled over and over again. The Love Bottle is designed to be customized! When you feel good about the bottle you will drink more water.

Love Bottle has a wonderful mission:
To spread love
To improve health
To create a canvas for self expression
To help the environment
To get clean water to people who need it

I was amazed at the facts presented on the Love Bottle website. Did you know that if 1000 people use a love bottle instead of one 8 oz plastic bottle, our plastic bottle consumption would be reduced by 365,000 bottles a year!

The Love Bottle comes in many exciting designs. You can write on or add stickers to customize your bottle. Courtesy of Love Bottle I was sent the Dream Big Bottle with fancy wind swirls etched right in the glass. Dream Big and Never Let Go is sandblasted on the bottle. The Love Bottle seals with a watertight swing-top lid made of stainless steel, ceramic and silicone. The bottle is dishwasher safe for cleaning with is convenient. It holds 500ml (17oz). I like to fill my Love Bottle and keep it chilled for convenient garb and go when I need it. My only concern with the Love Bottle is I find myself using it more at home or leaving it in the car, because it is glass, it adds weight to carry around while out and about. I use my Love Bottle to bring from room to room with me during the day. When I need more water I just refill it. Simple.

The Love Bottle comes in a variety of sizes and designs with prices starting at $12.00. You can find Love Bottles at select retail locations or you can order directly online. Love Bottle makes a great gift!

Take a stand on no plastic water bottles and switch to the refillable reusable Love Bottle.

Many thanks to Love Bottle for providing the review sample.

Here are a couple of recipes I found:

Taste of Home - Cherry Cobbler made with canned tart pitted cherries. Looks easy!

Bakin' and Eggs - Cherry Cobbler recipe adapted from Emeril Lagasse using fresh bing cherries and lots of them. Scrumptious.

Random Recipes - Root Beer Float Cake

Monday, May 17, 2010 Posted by One 2 Try

Today's random recipe is from the magazine Woman's World from a few years back. Root Beer Float Cake was made by 10 year old Eric Welander. I have made this tasty cake quite a few times. Serve it with vanilla ice cream and it is like a Root Beer Float. Yummy.

Root Beer Float Cake

1 (18.25oz) package yellow cake mix
1 (12oz) bottle root beer
¼ cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
Root Beer Glaze
Vanilla Ice cream

1. Combine first 4 ingredients in a large bowl; beat at low speed with an electric mixer until dry ingredients are moistened. Beat at medium speed 2 minutes. Pour into a greased and floured 12 cup Bundt Pan.

2. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or until a long wooden pick or skewer inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack 15 minutes; remove from pan and cool on wire rack.

3. Pierce top of cake at 2 inch intervals with a long wooden pick. Pour glaze evenly over cake. Cool completely before serving. Serve with ice cream. Yield: 1 (10 inch) cake.

Root Beer Glaze
½ cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons root beer

Stir together sugar and root beer until smooth.
